Research Abstract |
To figure out detailed image and physical properties of the subduction thrust fault system generating large earthquakes and tsunamis, we conducted 2-D/3-D seismic reflection data analysis and also acquired IODP (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program) drill data (core sample and downhole logging) in the Nankai Trough and Japan Trench margins. We revealed 3-D detailed structure, P-wave velocity structure, fault activity, and fluid supplier of the Nankai megasplay fault. High pore fluid pressures of the Nankai shallow megathrust fault play an important role in coseismic slip propagation all the way or nearly all the way to the trench. Moreover, high-resolution seismic reflection and LWD (logging while drilling) data allowed us to define the shallow megathrust fault that generated large tsunamis during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake (M9.0).
