Research Abstract |
We conducted the detailed analysis of the plate boundary faults in the Nankai Trough and the Japan Trench, where are located at the subduction zone producing devastating earthquakes and tsunamis.We moreover investigated structural, mineralogical, and chemical aspects of fault rocks, which were once deeply situated in the subduction zone but exhumed later on land. As the result, the aspects of fault rocks are quite variable and controlling factors for the sesimo-and tsunami-genesis are considered to be dependent upon the variability. Addition to the variability, it is clarified that existence of fluid in the plate boundary fault zone is quite important to determine the slip mechanisms of the plate boundary.
