Research Abstract |
We found that income and social inequalities have significant impacts on health and subjective well-being (such as perceived happiness and life satisfaction) in childhood and later life. We also observed that these impacts are relatively direct and not fully mediated by socioeconomic factors. Moreover, we showed that area-level income inequality and poverty have negative associations with individual-level subjective well-being as well as health and self-rated health, on which preceding studies have focused. These findings underscore that income inequality and poverty have serious impacts on health and subjective well-being and that policy measures are needed to tackle them.
