Outline of Research at the Start

これまでにない技術でミューオン加速を実証する。既に申請者は世界で初めて高周波加速器によるミューオン加速を実証し、宇宙の謎を紐解くカギとなるミューオン異常磁気能率(g-2)精密測定にむけたミューオン加速器の実現に着手している。本研究では本技術をさらに発展し、高周波空洞による新しい加速スキームを用いてミューオン加速器を小型化する。本研究によって、これまで宇宙線ミューオンで行われきた透視イメージングとは一線を画すミューオンビームによる超精密なイメージング分野の開拓が可能となる。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aims to develop a compact accelerator capable of accelerating muons from a nearly stationary state to near the speed of light. The muon beam generated by this system is expected to contribute not only to fundamental science but also to applications in materials and life sciences, particularly enabling much faster and higher-resolution transmission imaging compared to conventional cosmic-ray muons. To realize this goal, the study explores two novel acceleration technologies: cyclotron resonance acceleration and high-gradient accelerating structures. For the former, a newly designed accelerating cavity optimized for muons was prototyped and its fundamental performance was verified. For the latter, a new design methodology was established, and both prototyping and simulations confirmed the feasibility of high-quality acceleration. Together, these results demonstrate the successful proof of principle for the proposed acceleration technologies.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ミューオンビームによって実現するイメージング技術は、宇宙線で得られるイメージを質・量ともに凌駕するものである。例えば、宇宙線ミューオンで数日かけて検知できるコンクリート構造物中の~1cm程度の欠陥を、ミューオンビームはわずか数分で1mm以下の欠陥まで検知できることが示唆されている。これは、重大な社会問題となってきている橋梁、ダムなどの社会インフラの老朽化調査の刷新が期待されるものである。さらに高いエネルギーまで加速すれば、火山の観測、噴火予測まで実現できる可能性がある。このように、本研究は物理学、工学、地球科学など幅広い学問分野にパラダイムシフトをもたらすほどの多大かつ広範な波及が期待できる。
