Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、Slow地震やFast地震の物理化学素過程を解き明かすことを目的としている。特にその中でも「水はSlow-to-Fast現象に対してどのような役割を担っているのか」「構造・物性不均質はどのようにSlow-to-Fast地震の発生や発展に影響するのか」「微小領域物理での物理化学素過程はどのように巨視的な構成則に反映されるのか」に着目し、摩擦試験機や大型試験機による実験と、コンピュータによる数値実験を組み合わせ、これらの解明を目指す。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では力学実験と物理モデリングを両輪とした新たな「物質科学」を創出して、Slow-to-Fast地震を支配している物理化学プロセスを紐解き、そのプロセスを地震予測モデルに組み込むことを目指している。当該年度では、研究計画の第2段階として、前年度までに導入した装置・設備を用いた力学試験と数値実験を実施した。
水圧―トルク制御式摩擦試験機をもちいた強度回復実験では、セラミックボールを用いたトルク制御実験を実施した。低速度摩擦試験と中-高速摩擦試験では、遠洋性シルト岩を用いた大型リング剪断実験により、非排水条件下では有効応力の減少により断層強度が低下すること、またすべり時の間隙圧上昇に起因してすべり弱化距離が顕著に小さくなることなどを明らかにした。長大岩石摩擦試験では同一の実験条件のもとで実施した二つのスケールでのガウジ摩擦実験結果を比較し、速度-状態依存摩擦則のパラメタの一つがスケール依存することを明らかにした。また、非平衡物理モデリングからは、速度強化領域と速度弱化領域をランダムに分布している系では、両者の割合が拮抗している場合に複雑なすべり挙動が生じることを確認した。例えば、局所的な遅いすべりが断層面の異なる場所で交互に発生するサイクルなども発生する。他方、速度強化・弱化の面積割合がどちらかに偏っていれば、摩擦不均質性はすべりの安定性に対して本質的な影響を及ぼさず、「多数派」によって断層面のすべり特性が決定されることが分かった。
