Outline of Research at the Start

スロー地震、大地震、およびこれらをつなぐ遷移過程について、時空間マルチスケールモデルによる理解とその発生予測に関する研究を実施する。同時に、High Performance Computing (HPC)分野との連携を進めることで,研究領域の新たな展開を目指す。本モデリング・予測研究と研究領域内外で得られる各種観測研究との連携を深めるため,HPCも活用した解析・データ整備を実施する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

時空間マルチスケールモデリングのうち、大規模フォワード計算に関しては、日本海溝北部においてM5~8の4階層の円形パッチ領域を導入した準動的シミュレーションに着手した。この研究からは、長期の計算結果によるスケーリング則などの再現を通じ、観測される統計的特徴との比較・議論が期待される。加えて、相模トラフ沿いのプレート境界すべりの準動的シミュレーションに着手した。モデリングに関する研究としては、16年ぶりにスロー地震のスケール法則を見直し、より完全なものとして再構築した。その他にもスロー地震の孤立性や広帯域性を明らかにする研究、または普通の地震の動的震源核について理論研究を通じて、スロー地震と普通の地震の本質的違いを解明した。
予測に関する研究としては、前震活動とその他の地震活動との違いを分析し、リアルタイムで前震活動を確率的に識別する統計モデルを構築した。動的地震サイクルシミュレーションから出力された前震のカタログに機械学習を適用し、数十年から数分の幅広い時間スケールで本震までの時間を高い精度で予測できることを示した。さらに機械学習手法をA01班の岩石実験結果に適用する研究に着手した。これらの研究からは班間連携による、学問分野の新たな展開が期待される。相模トラフにおける力学的固着域および歪みエネルギー蓄積量を推定し、同地域で発生しうる巨大地震の破壊シナリオを作成した。前述の準動的シミュレーションと併せることで地震予測の議論のさらなる深化が期待される。
モデルと連携するためのデータ解析・整備に関する研究として、豊後水道で発生する長期的スロースリップイベントのすべり域の推定を行い微動分布との関連を議論した。アナログ波形をデジタルデータ化し解析する手法を開発し、デジタル記録のない時代の微動活動を解明する道を開いた。これらはモデルの高精度化に資することが期待される。

Reason

各分担者においてはおおむね計画したとおりの進捗状況である。新型コロナウイルス感染症が、感染症法上5類に移行し対策が緩和されたことに伴い、海外学会についてもほぼ当初計画どおり出席可能な状況となった。班内の月例のオンラインミーティングは引き続き開催し、研究者毎の研究発表・議論を行うとともに、3月にはつくば市で班の研究集会を開催し、活発な意見交換を行うことができた。本課題の研究をより推進するため、大規模計算を担当するメンバーで大型計算機利用の公募に申請し、来年度(2024年度)の利用が採択されており、利用可能な計算機資源の追加により研究の加速が期待される。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

計画はおおむね順調に進捗しており、基本的には計画調書に記載した方向で研究を推進する。班内での議論を行うため、定期的なオンラインのミーティングを継続するとともに、対面での班集会についても実施する。本課題のさらなる推進のため、大規模数値シミュレーション研究のための計算資源獲得についても引き続き検討する。プロジェクトは残り2年となるため、岩石実験や機械学習など他の計画研究において得られた知見との連携を目指した研究をさらに進める。2024-25年度については、本計画研究に関連する公募研究課題が3課題と増加した。新たなメンバーとの議論・連携の機会を増やせるよう、班内・班間交流を促す。
