Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
By analyzing trace element and stable isotope ratios in biological hard tissues, this study successfully reconstructed migratory routes and environmental conditions experienced by the organisms. For coastal fish species, neodymium isotopes were used to estimate natal origins; for salmon, δ18O values in otoliths enabled the reconstruction of water temperature histories; for Pacific bluefin tuna, both otoliths and eye lenses were used to trace spawning grounds and growth histories. In toothed whales, stable isotope analyses of tooth growth layers, combined with satellite tracking, revealed ontogenetic changes in distribution, behavior, and trophic level. This research has made it possible to uncover environmental histories over the whole life-history of marine organisms that was previously difficult to obtain through other methods, especially for fishery resources that inhabit remote oceanic regions beyond the reach of conventional monitoring techniques.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
