| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This project studied the paths of economic development emerging states followed in comparative historical perspective, with special reference to Asia. While economic historians suggested that industrialization in Western Europe and East Asia followed different paths by adapting to local factor endowment conditions, it has been argued that the regions which underwent colonialism, for example in South and Southeast Asia, were integrated into the world economy as exporters of primary products, and do not have such a strong path dependency which transcends political changes. We examined the growth of local and regional trade in these regions before, during and after the colonial period, and suggested that, while trade greatly mitigated local resource constraints, constraints of non-tradable goods such as water and local biomass often became barriers to rapid change. On both grounds we suggest the presence of path dependency, and multiple paths of long-term economic development.

過去四半世紀のあいだ、先進工業国の経済的停滞のなかで、中国や南アジアの人口稠密地域を含むいくつかの新興国で高い経済成長率が持続されてきたのはなぜか。欧米や日本の工業化の歴史と、そこで起きた技術・制度の革新の画期性を踏まえて、この問いに学術的な回答を与えることは、21世紀における国際秩序の動向を見極めるうえできわめて重要である。本研究は新興国が資源制約をいかに乗り越えようとしたか、そこにはどのような制約があったかについて、比較史的な見取り図を提供する。
