Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We experimentally study fluctuation and mechanical response in bio-matter and its model system driven by non-thermal field at mesoscopic scale. A new measurement method of microrheology which is able to measure the local mechanical properties of bio-matter even in flow and with large fluctuation is developed using multiple feedback method. This method is applied to living cells and cell extracts. It is revealed that the cytoplasm is vitrified by crowding, but the interior of the cell is fluidized by metabolic activity. We also study the fluctuation and dynamics of electro-convection in liquid crystals and bacteria bath as typical active fluids. In the former system, the relationship between the active diffusion constant and the degree of non-equilibrium is clarified. In the latter system, the distribution of fluctuation is found to vary from Gaussian to Levy with change in the size of the system and the concentration of bacteria.
