Considering that astrocytes generate intracellular Ca2+ signals to regulate their functions, we established an experimental system in which astrocytic Ca2+ signals could be visualized in vivo. Using the new experimental system, we found previously unrecognized transient and spontaneous Ca2+ signals at fine processes of astrocytes. We extended the method to monitor intracellular Ca2+ signals in neurons and vascular smooth muscle cells in vivo, and succeeded in comparing the responses of these three cell types in response to sensory stimulation to study the roles of astrocytes in such functions as cerebral blood flow regulation.
