Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This project was aimed at exploring how brain processes time. In order to build a solid foundation, we explored how time is handled in species-specific language, its philosophical significance, cross-linguistic variations of time expressions and its typological significance, and the development of time expressions in children. Based on our findings regarding these topics, we conducted fMRI experiments with Shigeru Kitazawa's research team, and found out that the medial regions involving the precuneus and the posterior cingulate cortex constitute a ‘map of time' that is shared across native speakers of different languages.
