Research Abstract |
In tropical coral reef areas many edible fishes may accumulate toxins through the food chain and thus cause human intoxication when eaten. Ciguatera represents the most prevalent form of such poisoning, affecting nearly 20,000 people annually. The aim of the present survey was set to elucidate the source and structures of implicated toxins. For the first time in ciguatera research, we determined with only 350 ug material the chemical structure of ciguatoxin, the principal toxin in ciguatera. We also proved the origin of ciguatoxin by isolating a less oxidized analos from this alga. The two toxins are characterized by the presence of 13 contiguously fused ether rings. They differed from each other only at the terminal parts of the molecules. The structural information suggests the possibility of screening individual fish by means of fluorometric HPLC analyses and immunoenzyme assays.
