Research Abstract |
This research project aimed to clarify the influences of the "Imported Civilization" in the formation of Southeast Asian cities and urban cultures in the historical perspectives utilizing both historical materials and observations on the spots. Influences of Hindu Civilization, Islam Civilization, and Western Colonialism on the Southeast Asian societies were particularly examined for this purpose. The research was carried out focusing on the formation of the networks in Southeast Asian societies, modifications of the laws provided by the Great Traditions, and development of. urban domain and urban culture. Centrality of the cities in Southeast Asia was also examined in their aspects of technological background of nation building, population movements, and cultural symbols. The research team was divided into four groups and the research was conducted in European libraries, Mediterranean cities, and Southeast Asian countries.
