Research Abstract |
1. The central aims of this project : We have made a plan to gather materials for studies on the social structure and a folk consciousness of modern China. The items of this social research have extended over a wide area, for example, a social life and home rules of a village, a household of a peasant and the social strata, the structure of a lineage, groups of militia and religious organizations, folk faiths and annual affairs, and activities of merchants and guilds, a local economic structure and so forth. I think, those materials could offer many useful suggestions for studies of the fundamentals of a social life at that time. 2. The schedule of this project : In 1988, we have carried out the main investigations at Shandong Province Juye County and Pingyuan County. And we have done out advance preparations at Beijing and Tianjing areas. In 1989, we have investigated at Fangshan District of Beijing Municipality and Jinhai County Duliu Township of Tianjing Municiparity. Comparing the m

aterials of two areas, that is, Shandong area with Beijing/Tianjing area, we would study the problems of diversity and uniformity of the social structure and folk culture in North-China. 3. The results of this project : The materials which we have gathered in our project can cover a wide range, and I think that those are very valuable for understanding a folk society of modern North-China. We have a plan to publish those materials in book form, "Society and Folk Culture of Modern China : (SASAKI, Mamoru(ed.) 1991). And we have published a book, "Chinese Family. Village, and Deities" (LU, Yao & Mamoru SASAKI(ed.) 1990), into which we collected our monographs written by the use of those materials and knowledges. 4. Some problems left behind : We have now recognized that we can not go so far as to suggest a set of theoretical theses of models on this subject. I think, it is absolutely necessary to reconsider the historical questions of the modernization in China and problems of its cultural individuality. Less
