The three-year research that began in 1987 has yielded a large amount of Okinawa-related material important for our occupation study. Research in the first year (1987) was done mainly in Washington DC, Boston, New York and San Francisco, resulting in the collection of papers related to the Carl Kaysen Mission and the peace treaty, in addition to an interview with former U.S. Ambassodor to Japan, Edwin O. Reishauer. In the second year, reams of copies were made at the U.S.Army Military History Institute, Carlisle Barracks, and several hundred copies were made from a private collection of Mr. Edward E. Freimuth, former liaison chief of the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus, in Virginia.
Because of a limited budget, only the project chief Professor Ota was dispatched to the Washington area, where he collected Okinawa-related papers at the National Archives, the Navy Library and other depositories. A symposium was held in Naha, Okinawa, in September, 1989, on U.S. occupation of the Ryukyus, with some 50 mainland occupation study researchers attending, the first of its kind ever held.
A plan is being made to publish the results of the project in both English and Japanese if possible.
