Research Abstract |
1. Film: This Year researchers Visited such American institutions as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the George Eastman House, the Film Department of the Library of Congress in Washington, and the Film Archive of the University of California, gathering information on the facilities, policies in Collecting and preserving films, holding screenings, and putting reference materials on display. We profited much from these visits, leaning much on the problems they face, how they handle inflammable films, what are the realities in their work in collection, preservation, and restoration, the variety of screening programs, and their eagerness in museum activities, and acquiring various facts useful in running our Film Center such as those concerning building a system to provide access to films through video machines. 2. Photography: The resercher visited major institutions in Europe such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the center Georges Pompidou and the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, and the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Hamburg, West Germany, and gathered information on the principles of collection and the details of preserving and presenting photographs, thus learning the differences between these institutions and those in the United States. 3. Various Design: This year we limited our researches to graphic design only and sent our researcher to the Poster Museum in Warsaw and the Department of Architecture and Design of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The former institution holds the internationally famous Poster biennial, and it not only has a vast collection of posters but also is very dedicated to the activities in collection, preservation, and utilization and has an advanced restoration system. We learned much useful information from the museum.
