Research Abstract |
This year, we endeavred to arrange data collected last year, held study meetings, wrote articles, and translated these articles into Portuguese. Americo Pellegrini Filho was invited from Brazil to check the articles in Portuguese with the members. Nakamaki researched into Indio-Brazilian religion, Japanese religion, and popular culture of northeastern and southern regions in Rondonia and Acre. One of his articles has been translated as "Mutacoes Contemporaneas de Religioes Japonesas : Principalmente Budismo no Brasil e nos Estados Unidos." Arai participated in a carnival in Recife and looked into its organization, especially Maracatu. His article is entitled "O Carnaval do Recife e a Formacao do Folclore Negro no Brasil." Furuya carried out a research in a black community in Maranhao and compared with other regions of Amazonia, focusing on transe and possession of Afro-Brazilian cults. He wrote a rather long article entitled "Umbandization in 'Amszonia' : 'Integration' into Brazil?", and its abridged version was translated into Portuguese. Americo Pellegrini is writing two articles on festivals such as Festa do Divino in Tiete and Folia de Reis in the southeastern region.
