Research Abstract |
Paralytic shellfish poisoning causes serious hazard to both public health and fishery industries in many countries. In this collaborative study, biological and toxigenic natures of a newly found toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum were investigated. The growth, sexuality and cyst production of the organism were fully demonstrated. HPLC analysis indicated that G. catenatum from Tasmania produced C1-C4 toxins as major components with slight amounts of rather unique decarbamoyltoxins. A new toxin found in both dinoflagellate and toxic mussels was shown to be 13-deoxydecarbamoylsaxitoxin by spectral analysis. Toxicity and stability of major toxins (C1-C4) as well as toxin profiles of Alexandrium minutum and A. tamarense from Australia was also clarified.
