Research Abstract |
1. Ground fissures and active faults in Xian and surrounding area Geomorphological maps and active fault map of the Weihe Basin are made. It was made clear that the great 1556 A.D. earthquake occurred from the Huashan Frontal fault and that the creeping ground fissures are probably not of tectonic origin, but due to artificial effect. The continuous microearthquake observation shows that the seismic activity in the region is now very row. 2. Fundamental study on seismic microzonation methodology Seismic refraction surveys of the 1976 Tangshan Earthquake area were carried out. It was found that that underground structure consists of 1.8 km/s layer and 5.7-6.0 km/s layer (base rock). The latter is shallow as 200m near Yutian. 3. Joint study on a simple system for data collection, transmission and analyzing continuous observation of crustal movement. A simple data collection and transmission system was developed by employing portable computer and a personal computer. Data base system was also contstructed. 4. Geochemical observation Two geochemical monitoring stations were settled at Guza and at Xichang, Sichuan Province. The observed data were examined in the view point of occurrences of earthquakes in the area nearby.
