Research Abstract |
Aiming at doing research on various aspects of rural industrialization in China since its economic reform in the early 1980's, our joint project started in 1989 with a partnership of the Development Institute under the Rural Development Center of the State Council, but as a wellーknown result of the political struggles which happened in Peking in that spring, it had to be ceased and postponed, primarily because our Chinese partners as well as the Institute itself were placed under strict control during the political campaignes in the aftermath of the Tiananmen square incident. The project made a new start in 1990, then with reshuffled research partners from the Rural Development Institute under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. After a long period of preparation keeping close contacts with them, we finally conducted a weekーlong research work from the end of November until the beginning of December in Wucheng county in Shandong Province, collecting a lot of valuable materials, in which the results of our systematic interviews with 80 agricultural households and more than hundred workers in village and township factories in the county are included. All of these materials and information are being processed into a useful data base for our statistical and comparative analyses of rural China. A SonoーJapan workshop in rural and agricultural changes in contemporary China was held in Tokyo for two days in early February, 1991, inviting three Chinese Scholars from the Institute and several Japanese specialists on China's rural affairs. The workshop proceeded with a tremendous success, in which eight papers mostly based on the joint research were presented for discussion in Chinese. Some of these are prepared for publication in the near future, either in Japan or in China
