Research Abstract |
In order to understand the characteristics of the low-level clouds and their heat budgets in winter over the warm sea around the East China Sea and the Southwest-Islands areas, the cooperative observational study was performed between Japan and China. 1. In January 1990 and 1991 the cooperative observations between Japan and China performed on the Amamiohshima (an island) simultaneously with the special observations by using the aircrafts on the "Western North-Pacific Cloud-Radiation Experiment" of WCRP. Especially in January 1991 the three microwave radiometers (6-channel, 54.4-60GH_z), 2-channel (52.9-54.5GH_z), and 2-channel (22.235 and 35.3GH_z) of Beijing University, the doppler-sodar etc. of the Japanese side are operated on that island for examinations on the structure of cloud layer and subcloud layer, together with NOAA AVHRR data and GMS data received at Nagoya University, and MOS-1, -1b data. 2. the Nagoya University was made at Shionomisaki in Japan before that observation (February 1989) and their data were relatively in good agreement with each other. 3. The Japanese scientists visited Beijing University every year from 1989 to 1990 for the discussions on the observational research plans and so on. On the other hand, the meeting was held in every year after the cooperative observations in Japan. 4. The improvements of the observation and the analysis systems of the doppler-sodar have enabled us to continue the observation even in weak rain situation. 5. The characteristics of the distribution of low-level clouds showed rather different features associated with the variation of large-scale atmospheric conditions (different types of cold air outbreak situations) and the sea surface temperature, i. e., the shallow convective clouds and the stratiform clouds. According to the detailed case study based on the NOAA AVHRR data the size of the clouds are rather smaller even at the downstream side in the northern area of East China Sea than around the Southwest-Islands area. 6. The numerical models are developed in order to understand the formation processes of these different types of clouds including the large-scale subsidence, heat and moisture exchanges at the sea surface and their vertical transfer, with special attention to the processes around the cloud top.
