Research Abstract |
It has long been known that a positive ion, if introduced in superfluid helium, exerts electrostriction on helium atoms surrounding it and acquires effective mass of 50 - 100 times the helium mass. Such a charged aggregate of helium atoms around an impurity ion is referred to as a snowball. High-energy beam of short-lived beta- and alpha-radioactive ions are introduced into superfluid helium as impurity ions and the snowballs formed around the radioactive ions are detected by the beta- and alpha-particles. Our interest is the use of ^6He and ^8He and many other short-lived beta- and alpha-active nuclei to study transport phenomena related to impurity ions and interactions of impurity ions with basic excitations in superfluid helium. Possibility has been pursued of carrying out an experimental project; STUDY OF CONDENSED MATTER AT LOW TEMPERATURE WITH RADIOACTIVE NUCLEAR BEAMS, at the newly constructed accelerator complex SIS-ESR of GSI at Darmstadt, Germany.
