Research Abstract |
Analysis of Sue ware from kiln sites throughout Japan have been made for these fifteen years by a energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. As a result, the indicators such as K, Ca, Rb, and Sr were found to be effective in mutually discriminating among mother groups (kiln groups). Thus, the origin for Sue ware from tomb sites can be looked for, by calculating Maharanobis' generalized distances from mother groups using these four indicators. In consequence, earliest Sue ware was found out in many local tomb sites in the areas from Kyushu to Tohoku districts. This sourcing method of ancient ware was applied to Korean earthen ware. Analysis was made for many samples excavated from kiln and tomb sites in the territories of both Paekche and Silla Kingdoms and in the basin of Raktong-gang River. Analytical data showed that earthen ware was supplied to tomb sites around Pusan, not only from the upper basin of Raktong-gang River, but also from the kingdom of Silla. Furthermore, the existence of unknown kiln sites was predicted in the area of Kimhae. Another application was on Tang three colors glazed ware. As the pecies of Tang three colors glazed ware are very valuable, so the analysis of these samples was made by non-destructive method. The indicators such as K/Ca and Rd/Sr were effective in mutually discriminating Tang three colors ware from Nara three colors ware. The analytical result showed that the piece of terra cotta figure excavated recently from Fujiwara Palace Site in Nara prefecture was real Tang three colors glazed ware, but that all the pieces of ware from Jike Site in Ishikawa prefecture were not real. Thus, a new method was developed in discriminating Tang three colors glazed ware.
