Research Abstract |
In Indonesia the survey of insect fauna on the stored products was made and the loss of the products by the pests was estimated in cooperation with Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The most serious damage by the insects Rhyzopertha dominica, Tribolium castaneum and Sitophilus oryzae, was found on seed and polished rice stored in the modern Bulog granary, although so serious damage was not found in the traditional farmer storage on the whole. In the Bulog granary the stored rice was fumigated with methyl bromide or phosphine almost every three months. In Tana Toraja, isolated for many centuries in the mountains of South Sulawesi, a bundle of rice ears was stored in the traditional rice barns, alang. No insect pests were found in the alangs with exception of the occasional occurrence of Sitotroga cerealella. In every alang many species of spiders, pseudoscorpions, cockroaches, ants, bugs and silverfishes were found. A great diversity of the community in the alang might inhibit well an outbreak of insect pests. In the granary of Chinese grain dealer spiders wove a thich web over all over the rice bags heaped up in that place and protected the stored rice against the attacks of insect pests. The experiment on the effect of spiders on the insect infestation was carried on in the farmer barn in the suburbs ofYogyakarta and it was confirmed that spiders could control in some degree the attack of Sitophilus zeamais on the stored rice. Necrobia rufipes was the most important pest on the copra stored in oil factory. Alphitobius diaperinus was one of the most serious insect pests of many kinds of stored products in Indonesia. No serious damage was found on stored tobacco and spices.
