Research Abstract

Two groups organized by Ameyama, the head investigator of this program, and by Duine, the partner of this joint research, have been leading pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) research since the structure of PQQ was determined. These two groups have different backgrounds in research and have worked separetely. The first joint research of these groups was made possible by this program. Ameyama visited several researchers in Europe working in the field related to PQQ and collected data for studies of PQQ enzymes, function of PQQ as vitamine, PQQ biosynthesis and the mechanism of getting energy by PQQ enzymes. After his inspectation in Europe he met Duine in the Netherlands, and discussed the future program of this project and 2nd international PQQ symposium which is intended to be held in Japan. Shinagawa, one of the investigators of this program, worked in Duine's laboratory for several months to investigate the effect of PQQ on growth of organisms. She taught how to handle mammalian cells and got a technique for quantitative analysis of PQQ which was recently reported by Duine's group. Furthermore, we have a plan that one of Dutch investigators is coming to our laboratory to study the reconstitution of methylamine oxidase system.
