Research Abstract |
Today, ASEAN countries have been rapidly industrializing as export-oriented economies heavily dependent on Japan's and Asian NIEs' direct investments. The export-oriented foreign direct investments (FDI) would be incompatible with establishing an integrated national economy, as the dependency theory on economic development advocates. In fact, their industrialization on the basis of export-oriented FDI seems to harmonize with their fundamental strategy that they will organizeanation-wide economies. However, we have to pay attention that the internal economic development goes side by side with establishing external economic link ages. This characterizes today's ASEAN countries' industrialization. In connection with the above-mentioned, we have made researches on the followings : (1) Japan's contribution to ASEAN countries' economic development from the viewpoints of FDI and official aid, (2) interrelationship between the establishment of Thai and Malaysian internal (nation-wide) networks of production, physical distribution and financing and their expansion in ASEAN and / or Asian Areas, (3) financing mechanism of Japan-based corporations and its impacts on the modernization of local financial markets, and (4)technology-transfer and modernization of enterprise management. The fruit of the study will be published as a book entitled "Japan's foreign investment and Asian Economic Interdependence" in English this autumn.
