Research Abstract

Observations aimed to the investigations on 2-dimensional structure of equatorial electrojet and also on propagation of magnetospheric ULF waves in the equatorial region were executed from Oct. 1990 to Mar. 1991. These observations covered five countries with cooperation of academic organizations which were Brazilian Institute of Space Science in Brazil, Cameroonian Geological Survey in Cameroon, British Geological Survey in U. K., University of New Castle in Australia and University of British Columbia in Canada.
Five of sixteen magnetometers were set up across geomagnetic equator in Brazil in order to examine the detail of North-South structure of equatorial electrojet, and two in Cameroon and three in Pacific Ocean (Palau, Yap and Guam) examining its East-West structure. At the same time, other magnetometers were set up in middle latitude regions, where were U. K., Australia, Canada and Japan to investigate the global propagation of magnetospheric ULF waves.
The present investigations thus covered a half of the equator longitudinally and also covered lower and middle latitude regions. The present network observation in such large equatorial region has never been tried so far in the world, and will contribute to revelation of the behavior of equatorial electrojet and also to explain the propagation of the magnetospheric ULF waves in the equatorial region. The data are now under processing.
