Research Abstract |
In 1988, according to a decision of the International Association of Geodesy, the Third International Comparis on of Absolute Gravimeters was conducted at Sevres. Ten instruments took part in the comparison : One each from Austria, BIPM, Canada, China, Finland, Italy, Japan, USA, USSR, and West Germany. The differences of gravity force between the instruments and the vertical gradients were measured by a group of relative gravimeters consisting of ten LaCoste-Romberg instruments of various modifications with a mean error on the order of <plus-minus>1 mu ga As a result of comparison, with a mean root square error in the measurement of the absolute gravity force of about 10 mu gal, significant systematic error was not detected. This comparison established that modern absolute gravimeters have an approximate equal measurement accuracy, characterized by standard error on the order of 10 mu gal. The Japanese absolute gravimeter proved to be one of the best instruments in terms of deviation from the mean and repeatability.
