Research Abstract |
Temperature, humidity, wind velocity and sunshine have been measured at caves No. 53 and No. 194 of Dunhuang Mogao Caves since 1989. Cave No. 53 is located on the lower level of a cliff and Cave No. 194 is on the upper level. The climate data are recorded every hour (twenty-four times a day) in data loggers. The annual mean temperatures in 1990 were 12.1゚C at cave No. 53 and 14.3゚C at No. 194, while the annual mean humidities were 28% RH and 22% RH respectively. In order to measure the humidity in the rock of the caves, holes were dug in the ceiling of cave No. 194 and on the floor of eave No. 53. The results were as follows. 1. The temperature changes (daily and annually) and the daily humidity changes in both eaves were much smaller than those outside. 2. Slow wind was observed at the floor of cave No. 194 due to seasonal temperature changes. 3. Humidity within the two holes was always kept at about 75% which is unusually higher than elsewhere. The following can be deduced from an analysis of the results. The wall paintings of the cave deteriorated mainly by water even though Mogao Cave is situated in a desert region. Rain and ground water move through the rock of the caves ; then water evaporates from or near the surface. The evaporation causes spotted flakings of the wall paintings by efflorescence of soluble salts. The efflorescence may be accelerated by wind in caves and by a wrong method of restoration.
