Research Abstract |
Sponsored by A Grant under The Monbusho International Scientific Research Program, the symposium, with the theme of "Oral Tradition in the Comparative Studies of Japanese and Indonesian Cultures", was the first in a series of symposia which constitute a threeーyear project of the first stage and begun in September 1988 to institute joint research between Japan and Indonesia and exchange of scholars. The session focused on the role of the oral tradition in the history reconstruction, and the function and modification of the oral tradition in modern society. The following second symposium was held in September 1989 with the theme of "Some Aspects of the Comparative Studies on Japanese and Indonesian Cultures", focusing on the oral tradition in the history writing, the role of the traditional cultures in the development of the national tradition and the relations between folklore and national myth. The last symposium held in February 1991 under the theme "Cultural Traditions in Japan and Indonesia", focused on the changing traditional culture in the modern world and the comparative method of Japanese and Indonesian cultures. Each symposium was participated in by sixty scholars on an average and during the three symposia, the Indonesian language was used for all presentations and discussions. This joint research was the first attempt to enable Japanese and Indonesian scholars to cooperate, especially in the field of human and social sciences. In holding the symposium in Jakarta, we hope to achieve mutual understanding on the academic level and also deepen personal relationships between Japan and Indoensia.
