Research Abstract |
We intended to facilitate the auditory response behavior of profoundly multiply handicapped children (PMHC) and their modification of communication behavior. Results were as follows ; (1) The evaluation method of auditory response behavior development of PMHC. (]SY.encircled1,[) Procedure of BOA ; the presentation method of auditory stimuli and the evaluation method were constructed on trial. (]SY.encircled2.[) Teaching method for auditory learning ; 4 levels of auditory response behavior were classified (level of startle reflex, level of intentional reaction, level of emotional reaction, level of positive exploration), and the teaching methods for each levels were arranged. (]SY.encircled3.[) Trial use of Hearing Aids ; the conditions to use HA were examined. (2) One month program of auditory learning using selected auditory stimuli, which was arranged in above (2), was applied to 38 PMHC subjects. (]SY.encircled1.[) Many cases showed the improvement of their auditory response behavior, esp

ecially in shifting from the level of startle reflex to the level of intentional of emotional reaction. (]SY.encircled2.[) It was estimated that the development to the level of positive exploration was caused by generalizing acquired behavior to their daily lives. (3) A case study on a 5-year-old PMHC boy in a day nursery was made. The materials collected on this case were ; the observation record of his Behavioral Observation Audiometry (BOA), level of auditory learning and of his trial use of HA ; video tapes recording his communication behavior with a nurse ; nurse's longitudinal diary. (]SY.encircled1.[) The development of his auditory response behavior was deeply related to the nurse's viewpoint. (]SY.encircled2.[) It improved the relationship between the child and the nurse that he acguired a new audtory response behavior. We could add the data from an institution for profoundly multiply handicapped adult on their cognitive processes of auditory stimuli and on their communication with care staffs. Consequently we could get the frame of the intended facilitation program. Less
