Research Abstract	1. Summary :This is an interdisciplinary research on the right of privacy in which a variety of issues involving privacy arising from liuman activities are analyzed and explicated through joint research work conducted by 23 researchers in the respective field of laws (constitution, administrative law, civil law, criminal law, labor law. history of laws, comparative law) and social sciences (sociology, political science, pedagogy). 2. Major contents: (1)To clarify the concept of the right of privacy; (a)definitions appeared in statutory laws, case laws or theories in major countries have been studied and analyzed. (b)benefits to be protected under the right of privacy have been clarified in distinction from other similar benefits. (c)nature of the right of privacy has been analyzed and elucidated. (2)To make a thorough analysis of the Japanese system for the protection of privacy; (a)theories concerning construction of constitution and other laws, actual application thereof and points at issues have been reviewed and analyzed. (b)personal information protection systems adopted by local governments or private sectors and points at issues have been reviewed and analyzed. (3)With respect to the issue of conflict between protection of privacy and freedom of speech, study has been made from the viewpoint of judicial review criteria. (4)Regarding systems for the protection of privacy in USA, England, West Germany, Italy, Canada, Sweden, France and Belgium, theories and actual practices have been thoroughly reviewed and analyzed. (5)Most lawsuits involving the right of privacy in Japan and other countries mentioned above have been introduced for reference.
