Research Abstract |
In order to solve the global environmental problems, we must study the entire atmospheric regions as unified system. Following observations of the middle atmosphere (altitude range : 10-100Km) since the period MAP (Middle Atmosphere Program ; 1982-85), we carried out this two-year investigation of which the objective were to elucidate possible responses of the middle atmosphere to physical and chemical forcings from the upper atmosphere (100-1000Km) and the lower atmosphere (0-10 Km), and to make the basis of studies under STE (Solar Terrestrial Energy Program ; 1990-95). In the first fiscal year (1989), we had several meetings and data exchanges among the cooperative investigator and listed up various responses of the middle atmosphere to the upper-atmospheric electrodynamic forcing an the lower-atmospheric thermal, dynamical and chemical forcings. The results were as follows : 1. Forcings from the lower atmosphere : Wave climatology and research strategy were studied by statistic analy

ses of observational data with the MU radar, RASS and radiosondes. 2. Forcings from the upper atmosphere : Research strategy was studied on the basis of observational data wit the MU radar and ionosondes. 3. Physical and chemical responses : Fundamental modeling and research strategy were studied by summarizin the theories and the lidar and satellite observations. In the final fiscal year (1990), we continued discussions and obtained successful results as mentioned below : (i) Significance of the equatorial radar project in Indonesia was established through overview of the locality forcings from above and below. (ii) DYANA (Dynamics Adapted Network for the Atmosphere) project was carried out by international cooperation, and the validity of our research strategy was proved by data analyses. (iii) Solar-terrestrial physics in the next century was discussed, and three important targets were selected a follows : (a) continuous observations and longer temporal scale phenomena; (b) dynamical-chemical couplin and transport processes ; and (c) new physical viewpoints and research systems.
