Research Abstract |
There are many kinds of organelles in plant cells each of which has its specific organelleーcycle. The organelles may change their structure and function in the cycles. It is the purpose of this work to investigate the structural and functional changes during the cycles of six kinds of organelles and to discuss the diversity and universality of the organelle-cycles. 1. Chloroplast. Chloroplastーthylakoids in Porphyra exhibited the positive reaction for activities both phtosystem I and II throughout the cell cycle, while pyrenoids did not show any activity for photosynthesis. RubisCo was detected both at stroma and pyrenoids in the cell cycle of Euglena. The evidence was obtained which shows the contribution of actin filaments to the chloroplast division in Closterium. 2. Nucleus. A strain of candida was isolated which produces polyploidies by the temperature shift. 3. Mitochondria. Electron dense granules were detected at the narrow regions of dividing mitochondria in Scenedesmus. They are interpreted as the dividing apparatus of the mitochondria. 4. Organelleーnucleoids. A methed was developed to observe mitochondrial nucleoids, by which their behavior in various tissueーcells was clarified. A plasmid was specified which controls the fusion of mitochondria and of mitochondrial nucleoids. The distribution pattern of the chloroplastーnucleoids was independent upon the activity of photosynthesis. 5. Flagella. Changes in the arrangement of flagellar rootlets were elucidated in young zygotes of Monostroma. 6. Filasome. The behavior of filasomes in the cell cycle of yeast cells, especially during the cell wall formation was observed and the role of filasomes on the morphogenesis was discussed.
