Research Abstract	All place names appeared in 4, 422 sheets of 1 : 25, 000 topographic map of Japan are listed by means of computer. Place names are nearly 400, 000 in number. The list consists of place name in Chinese character (Kanji), place name in Japanese alphabet (Kana), town, prefecture, sap name, longitude and latitude. This gazetteer will be useful, together with previously published gazetter based on 1 : 200, 000 maps involving 120, 000 records, in locating place names on base sap for biogeographical study, especially in drawing distribution maps by computer. This will also be useful in cultural science for numerical treatment of place names.
