Research Abstract |
We have tried to examine the possibility of the Ryukyus' becoming resorts, considering also the possibility of economic and cultural development of the regional community. Methodologically. we have laid stress on the organization of cooperatlye systems on the ground that we should Promote participation of local minor enterprizes in the travel industry. Our study consists, firstly, of the general analysis of "the Tropical Resort Plan" of Okinawa Prefecture, secondly, of an inquiry into the progress and the present situation of the Okinawan tourism and resort development, and the present situation and problems of the management and organization of the minor enterprizes in the tourism, and lastly of our suggestion about the problems to be solved in the future. As to "the Tropical Resort Plan, " Onna Village, well-known summer resort area, has already experienced headaches raised from resort deyelopment such as skyrocketing increase of land prices, flowing out of red clay, water shortage, and so forth. If they try to develop the Ryukyus entirely as indicated in the plan, various problems in Onna could spread all over the prefecture. Majority of the developers are those of "mainland" Japan's major capitals. Meanwhile related local buslnesses have not put on firm bases yet. Our conclusion is that tourism on Okinawa should not designed as gigantic contrivance industries but hosegrown resort filled with traditional products and culture, wonderful landscapes, hospitality and so on ; and that strong leadership by the local government and ralsing human resorces are most to turn this into reality.
