Research Abstract

1 A set of experimental system applicable to beta-NMR measurements has been designed and constructed. By use of the system, the fundamental study for the beta-NMR technique was extensively performed by bombarding incident beams onto targets to produce short-lived beta-radioactive nuclei, implanting them into stopping crystals, and detecting beta-rays emitted from the nuclei.
2 In order to expand its applicability to a wide variety of short-lived radioactive nuclei, the tilted foil technique has been applied and developed for productions of nuclear polarization in those nuclei. In particular, the fundamental mechanism of the technique has been extensively studied to increase its effectiveness in the polarization creation. The technique was further applied to medium heavy nuclei.
3 For post-accelerations of beta-radioactive nuclei produced in nuclear reactions, a small RFQ-linac named "LITL" was prepared and tested. A high-power rf-oscillator connected with LITL was tuned and tested to optimize its acceleration conditions of ions.
4 For the post-accelerations of those short-lived nuclei of interest, a HiECR ion-source was developed and tested.
5 A small electric magnet was designed and constructed to analyze rigidities of the accelerated ions by combining a power supplier. The magnet was tested by separating ^6Li and ^7Liions extracted from an existing Liion source.
6 It is planned for the future research of this project that a new field in nuclear physics, as well as an interdisciplinary field between nuclear physics and particle physics, will be explored by investigating a variety of polarized beta-radioactive nuclei prepared by use of the experimental systempresently developed.
