Research Abstract |
In computer programming class of universities, mainframes are usually used in TSS environment. However, response of the computer becomes slow because of increasing students and/or classes. To cope with the problem, this research considers the use of distributed computer system for education. The objective of the research is to propose an organization method of a distributed environment. Results of the research can be summarized as follows : 1. In order to obtain maximal performance in distributed environment, the following conditions must be satisfied. (1) Main memory of client workstation must be installed sufficiently. (2) Each network segment is not connected to no more than 10 workstations. And more memory size of the clients is effective than connecting local disk for swapping. 2. In order to improve user interface of Unix operating system, we develop a text editor for beginners. Function of collecting type script of users is embedded into the editor, and we analyze behavior of beginners in programming. Data obtained are useful not only for improvement of the editor but also for programming education. 3. Personal computers are generally used as terminals of host computers. For use of personal computers as terminals of Unix, we developed an interface to display graphical output from Unix. Moreover we consider the performance of X server program for personal computers.
