Research Abstract |
The stomatognathic system is contributed with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), masticatory muscles (Mm), occlusion and central nerve system (CNS) and these elements are physiologically well balanced each other in the normal stomatognathic functions. If the one of the elements becomes abnormal (disturbance), total balance of the stomatognathic system may be broken. It is well known that the craniomandibular dysfunction could be occurred when the such unbalanced situation beyond a certain threshold level. Dentists, especially prosthodontist often deal with the occlusion for dental treatments. If the new occlusion given to the patients with denture is not accommodate to their stomatognathic system, the problems such as craniomandibular dysfunction could be induced. therefore the studies of the occlus ion is very important in the dental field. The purpose of this project is to investigate the role of occlusion in the craniomandibular dysfunction, especially its effect to the TMJ and the Mm. In 1989, epidemiologic survey of stomatognathic system was carried out and the relationship between the occlusal disharmonies and the disturbances of the TMJ and the Mm were analyzed. In 1990, the reactions of the TMJ and the Mm to the occlusal changes were investigated and following results were shown. 1), The subjects with occlusal problems were tend to have the disturbances of the TMJ and/or the Mm, it is, however, not found clear relationship between the occlusion and the TMJ and/or the Mm problems in each subject. 2), The subjects with posterior bridge (Br) including most posterior tooth as abutment were tested by TMJ-radiograph and EMG. The condylar displacement and EMG variations were found with removing the Br.
