Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to evaluate a dental health activity at primary schools comparatively. From the period of 1979 to 1990, an intensive dental health activity was conducted at a primary school (A-school) in Hiraizumi, lwate Prefecture. In the same period, a routine dental health activity was also conducted at another primary school in Ohya (B-school), Miyagi Prefecture. Questionnaires were taken only from the children of the 4th, 5th and 6th school grades of both the primary schools in 1986 and 1989. It was made a comparison of the oral health status and questionnaires answered of both the schools. The results were the following : 1) The mean number of D. MFT decreased significantly in the A-school in the research period in all school grades examined. On the other hand, there was almost no change of the mean number of DMFT in the B-school. The Care index (FT/DFT, %) increased in both the schools. In 1989, the indices of the A-school and the B-school were 81.5% and 78.5%, respectively. 2) The mean score of Dl-$ (OHI-S) index decreased in both the schools in 1986 and 1989. Nevertheless, excepting the 2nd school grade, the indices of the A-school were lower than those of the B-school. 3) The mean score of PMA index (anteriors only) also decreased in both the schools in the research period. All the same, excepting the 4th school grade of 1989, the indices of the A-school were lower than those of the B-schooI. 4) In the A-school, children had much more interest and consciousness on their oral health and had fewer subjective symptoms concerning dental caries and gingivitis. In addition, behaviors relating dental health were improved among the A-school children. We hope that the outcomes from this research can be of use for school dental practice in the near future.
