Research Abstract |
Application of oriental medicine in dentistry has been gaining popularity in recent years. In orthodontics, there are reports of its use in pain control. However, no studies have been reported of its effect during orthodontic tooth movement. It is well established that the electro-acupuncture(EAP)not only alleviates pain sensation but also stimulates autonomic nervous system causing vascular dilation with increased blood circulation. The authors in how EAP would affect the periodontal tissues during orthodontic force application. Two groups of first premolars were established. The first group received compressive orthodontic force only(non-EAP group). The second group received needle acupuncture stimuli(EAP group). Pulp tissue's substance p excretion amount difference was compared using immunofluorescent analysis method. Furthermore, experimental lipid mold injection into blood vessels was carried out and specimens were obtained to analyze vascular changes and bone remodeling. MATERIAL

S AND METHODS : Perpendicular compressive force was applied to the patients' first premolars. The left sides were designated as the non-EAP group and the right sides were the EAP group. EAP was delivered to the acupfincture stimulation to Gokoku(Hoku)for 15 minutes daily. Compression was continued for two weeks. Microvasculature analysis with the 3-D scanning electron microscope was performed on the rat specimen's first premolars after compression and resin injection. RESULTS : (1)No marked changes were seen in blood pressure and pulse rate. (2)The non-EAP group showed increased SP amount in conjunction with orthodontic force application. However, the SP amount decreased in the EAP group most likely due to the electrical stimuli causing histamine inhibition which in turn caused increased enkephalin. (3)Analysis of the apical microvasculature changes showed loss of the double structure in the non-EAP group only after one day of tooth movement. Exposure of bone was confirmed showing osteoclastic activity and loss of Volkman's canals. Peripheral area showed resorption resulting in fossa formation containing vasculature loops within. On the other hand, the EAP group showed virtually no bone alteretion with intact microvasculature which indicates that the EAP has a definitive effect on osteoclastic and osteoblastic activities.
