Research Abstract |
We studied the language education and the diversity of educational policies on integration of medium instruction in South-eastAsian countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Srilanka and India. First, as a social type of language, we analyzed how national language, official language, local language, mother language, and classical language are used in each country. In some countries national lunguage is used as common language but in Singapore, Philippines and India official language has beeen used. Second, the relationship between educational policies and medium of instruction has been examined. Particularly it is our concern that among many social languages which language and how many languages has been selected as medium instruction in each country. In Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar and Srilanka they use one language, mainly national language as medium of instruction. On the other hand, in Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and India, two languages, mother language, either national language or official language, have been selected as medium of instruction. Third, the relation between medium of instruction of language education and national integration has been pursued. There has been three types of the relation. The first is an assimilation type, making medium of instruction into one language. This is found in Thailand, Indonesia and Myanmar. The second is an integration type, using plural mediums of instruction. This is in Malaysia, Singapore and Srilanka. The third is a multi-culture type which allows several mediums of instruction and language education like India.
