Research Abstract |
The nymphal development of those spiders which inhabit buildings was studied in relation to photoperiod, because the spiders inhabiting in buildings generally live under a strong influence of artificial lighting. In AchaearaneaB tepidariorum and Pholcus Phalang ioides, which inhabit buildings, nymphal development was not affected by the difference of photoperiod. In other words, it can be said that such an insensibility to photoperiod in house inhabiting species enables them to complete their life cycle even under the strong influence of artificial lighting. However, in Xysticus croceus and Pholcus criptocolens, which never inhabit buildings, nymphal development was strongly delayed under short photoperiod. This delay of nymphal development may have a close connection to the commencement of over winter in the fall under field conditions. It is considered, that these differences in relation to photoperiod are important characteristics of the above mentioned 2 spider groups.
