| Research Abstract |
The refractive index of a-C : H films prepared by glow discharge decomposition of C_3H_8 with an induction coupled rf power input was reported to be about 1.8. However, it was found in the waveguide experiment that the refractive index is not so large. Since the refractive index of films must be larger than that of a substrate to guide optical waves, the refractive index of a-C : H films at 632.8 nm was obtained by measuring the reflectivity dependence on the incident angle of a He-Ne laser beam. The obtained values of the refractive index of a-C : H films were 1.53 to 1.55 for the deposited films and 1.6 to 1.7 for the annealed films.
The structure change of a-C : H films by uv-light irradiation and annealing was investigated from the infrared absorption spectra and time-resolved photoluminescence spectra in a-C : H films deposited on a Si substrate. Two emission bands centered at 450 and 580nm were found. The origin of the former was found to be dependent on the C-H combination.
The waveguiding experiment of a He-Ne laser beam was performed by using the prism coupling method for a-C : H films on a quartz substrate. TiO_2 and LaSF-08 prisms were used. However, good prism-coupling and waveguiding could not be achieved. The reason has not been resolved yet. The waveguiding of a beam from a W-lamp was also tried, but it was difficult to waveguide the beam with high efficiency. A tunable laser such as a dye laser is necessary for the probe beam to guide with high efficiency.
Although the inverse-Raman signals have not been detected since the waveguiding could not be achieved, the principle we proposed can be applied to many films and we continue to study and develop the method.
