Research Abstract |
The present studies on certation in barley have been conducted as a marker of distorted segregation of genotypes at the complex loci, Est_1, Est_2 and Est_4, for esterase isozymes, since the Ga_2 locus for the certation is linked with the complex loci on chromosome 3. 1. The distortion was always observed in F_2 populations derived from cross combinations between the Ga_2 and ga_2 varieties, and magnitudes of the distortion Mid not vary significantly among the F_1 plants grown in different years, temperatures and day-lengths. Furthermore, the magnitudes were also stable in different cytoplasms and genetic backgrounds. 2. The distorted segregation in hybrid populations of reciprocal backcrossings between the Ga_2 and ga_2 varieties suggested that the distortion was caused by selective pollination of the Ga_2 pollens, independent of female aenotypes. 3. The distortion could not be detected by pollination of mixed pollens from the Ga_2 and ga_2 varieties, and also by single pollen pollination of the F_1 plants between the Ga_2 and ga_2 varieties. From these results, the distortion was observed only when the pollens of the Ga_2 ga_2 heterozygous hybrids were pollinated. 4. Geographic regulality of allelic distribution at the Ga_2 locus was found. Most of the varieties in the world carried the ga_2 allele, although only a few varieties in eastern and southern regions of Asia possessed the Ga_2 allele. The Ga_2 varieties were mainly naked and six-rowed barley, whereas these characters were controlled by different genes which were independently inherited.
