Research Abstract |
In this study we examined the effects of stimulation and of lesions of various sites of limbic hypothalamic system on metabolism of amino acids in rabbit's liver, and also observed the effects of lesions to limbic or hypothalamic structures on metabolic responses of amino acids in liver slices prepared from rabbits to cold stress for 12 hours at a fixed lime once a day. The results were as follows. 1. The stimulation of the dorsal hippocampus (HPC), medial amygdala (AMYG), ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), periventricular arcuate nucleus (ARC) and lateral hypothalamic area had various effects on the metabolism of amino acids, and the metabolic patterns of amino acids were altered by lesioning the dorsal fornix (FX), stria terrninalis (ST), VMH and ARC. 2. The actions of stimulation of HPC on metabolism of amino acids were abolished by FX lesions, and the actions of stimulation of AMYG on metabolism of amino acids were abolished by ST lesions. 3. The 1st cold exposure (cold exposure on the

1st day) had marked and various effects on metabolism of amino acids, and the metabolic responses of amino acids to cold exposure gradually decreased and then completely disappeared with its repetitions in intact rabbits. 4. The metabolic responses of amino acids to the 1st cold exposure were altered by lesioning the ARC, VMH, ST and FX. 5. The complete abolishment of the metabolic responses of amino acids to cold exposure by its repetition was observed in rabbits with lesions in the ARC or VMH as well. 6. In contact, metabolic responses of amino acids to cold exposure in rabbits with lesions in the ST or FX remained even after its repetitions. 7. These results suggested that the ARC, VMH, AMYG-ST-hypothalamic system and HPC-FX-hypothalamic system played a role in the metabolic regulation of amino acids and in the metabolic responses of amino acids to the 1st cold exposure and that the AMYG-ST-hypothalmnic and HPC-FX-hypothalamic systems, but not the ARC or VMH, participated in the process of the metabolic adaptation of amino acids to daily repeated cold exposures.
