Research Abstract

Objectives of the research project are to clarify the origin and formation process of the ice body bearing in the permafrost region, related to paleoclimatology and environmental study of the Arctic, using glaciological, geochemical and geological method, as well as information on the water budget, ecological changes, erosion and deposition of reworked till, topographic changes, isostatic uplift in the period from the glacial epoch throughout to post-glacial present in this region.
Expedition parties have been sent to Tuktyaktuk, Mackenzie Delta, Western Arctic Canada in summer and winter and carried out geological survey, topographic traverse survey and sampling for ecological study and geochemical analyses. In winter, sampling of the core of the ice body were carried out using portable electro-mechanical drilling machine and also ground sounding using impulse radar.
Data and samples obtained have been analyzed by each scientists and discussed with scientists of the project and will be published as the research reports.
Results obtained so far showed that the characteristics of ice bodies between Pingo and Massive Ground Ice were remarkedly different from each other based upon crystallographic study, geochemical analyses and geological observation.
The results strongly suggest that the ice body of the Massive Ground Ice originates from superimposed snow-ice formed by congelation of water and buried under the till, while, that of the Pingo originates segregated ice of ground water and have formed after the Hypsithermal.
