Research Abstract

Indonesia is a world-prominent country rich in natural resources an this may guarantee us for many medicinal plants hitherto unknown to be available. However, chemical and biological investigations of bioactive principles in those medicinal plants, have not yet been fully carried out.
Our research project entitled "Investigation of Naturally Occurring Drug Materials in Indonesia-3" aims at revealing the naturally occurring drug materials, i. e. medicinal plants, in Indonesia and points towards the development of the academic exchange between Japan and Indonesia.
In 1990, we surveyed in Province Bengkulu, Riau, and North Sumatera in Sumatera Island, Indonesia and collected information about 360 kinds of traditionally used medicinal plants from local people and gathered 68 kinds of medicinal plants for chemical study, which will be carried out at Osaka University.
In 1991, all specimens were botanically identified at Herbarium Bogoriense, Bogor, Indonesia. The alcoholic extract of these specimens were made and examined by means of several kinds of chromatographic technique and bioassay at Osaka University. The analytical studies are in progress. We have so far obtained some promising evidence so that the chemical and biological studies of those materials collected in our survey may lead us to find new biologically active substances.
The collaboration with Research and Development Center for Biology-LIPI, Indonesia, which is the Indonesian participating organization, has been proceeded very smoothly. The desirable collaboration will certainly be continued in this manner hereafter.
