| Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference of "Chineseness" between ethnic Chinese students of Malay (national language) and Chinese language high schools in Malaysia.
Melaka, a typical Malaysian city in which Chinese population is predominant, and Kota Baru, where Chinese people have been rather integrated with Malays, were chosen as places to conduct our field survey. More than seven hundred samples were collected in the two cities.
In addition, we visited several other areas, including Singapore and Brunei, to interview leaders of ethnic Chinese groups who are expected to provide us unpublished materials or unofficial information on language and cultural issues in Chinese communities.
The following results have been discussed so far :
1) Although there are no radical difference in "Chinese consciousness" in the students of two types of schools, the national language school students seem relatively open to their attitudes toward race relations or racial cultures.
2) The command of Chinese language of those high school students seems better in Melaka than in Kota Baru regardless their school types. Therefore, the Melaka students can approach Chinese classics easier and they could have more opportunities to maintain the traditional ideas. It does not mean, however, the Kota Baru students are less Chinese culture-oriented. Still they are very much interested in their cultural background.
3) There are at least two factors which make difference in the degree of the students' consciousness about "Chinese". The factors are the type of education medium and the population structure of areas. However, so far as ethnic Chinese have to remain in their in-group businesses under the discriminated political situation, they could have less incentive to disband their ethnic ties. As a result, Chinese language education will survive and "Chineseness" will also be exposed longer.
