Research Abstract |
The distribution of MHC (major histocompatibility complex) haplotypes in Korean was first studied in an extensive family samples. A total of 30 families with 150 members (each family has three children) living in Seoul, Korea, were typed for HLA-A, -B, -C, -DR, and -DQ, as well as HLA-linked complement markers, C4A, C4B and factor B (BF). The results are summarized as follows ; 1) The distribution of MHC haplotypes in Korean was similar to those in Japanese and Northern Chinese which we studied previously, and considerably different from that in European. 2) However, in detail, there were significant differences among the East Asian populations. Korean was between Japanese and Northern Chinese and closer to Japanese in terms of MHC haplotype distribution. 3) Several common MHC haplotypes showed characteristic distribution patterns in the East Asian populations. A few haplotypes were common in every population, while several haplotypes were common in both Korean and Japanese but rare in Northern Chinese. In contrast, the predominant haplotypes in Northern Chinese was also common in Korean but very rare in Japanese. Therefore the MHC haplotypes may become powerful markers for studying the genetic affinities among closely related populations.
